A Berlin man accused of shooting at two police officers in March is being held on $1 million bond at Garner Correctional in Newtown and has been charged with attempt to commit murder.
Police shot Jeffrey Yeaw, 45, when they responded to his house at 18 Peck St. after he fired at the officers, police said.
Berlin police went Yeaw's house at 18 Peck St. at 10:35 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 to break up an argument after a man reported being involved in a dispute with his nephew, police said.
As two officers responded, one man met police outside the house.As police approached the residence, Yeaw fired shots from the house and one officer drew his service weapon and shot, striking Yeaw twice, police said.
Berlin police asked the State's Attorney Office and the state police central district major crime squad to investigate and Lt. Paul Vance, of the State Police, said last month that police would serve warrants against Yeaw after he'd been cleared medically.
Yeaw has since recovered from the gunshot wound and was charged with three counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree criminal attempt to commit assault, three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal attempt to commit assault on pubic safety personnel, unlawful discharge of a firearm, interfering with an officer, second-degree unlawful restraint and disorderly conduct.
Yeaw caused an Amber Alert in 2004, according to sources. The second Amber Alert in Connecticut was issued in 2004 when Yeaw took his three children from social workers in Willimantic, according to reports at the time. The children were not harmed.
