Bill Clarifies Requirements for AG

Lawmakers are looking at legislation that would clearly define the requirements for potential candidates.

Lawmakers at the Capitol on Monday are debating legislation that would clarify the qualifications required to run for Attorney General in Connecticut.

The requirements came into question in 2010, when the State Supreme Court ruled that former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz did not have the required 10 years of active practice to run for office.

The clarified law would require an AG candidate to be a member of the bar continuously for at least 10 years.

Bysiewicz had sued her own office, arguing that her service as secretary of the state should fulfill the requirement.

Bysiewicz was disqualified from the AG race and is currently among the Democrats running for the nomination to replace retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman.
