Bitter Cold Brutal to Your Car

When the temperature drops, the calls for roadside service start rolling in.  Many drivers experience problems with their motor vehicles.  One call Tuesday night was for tire trouble.

“The rubber sometimes, I guess it can freeze up, when the temperatures is really brisk out, and I guess make things really brittle, and I guess the rubber can get very brittle, and that’s what it seems like happened.  The valve piece had nothing to hold onto and it probably cracked and snapped right out,” said Phil Weatherspoon of Wethersfield.

AAA says what’s even more common than flat tires is cars not starting up at all.  Drivers are usually affected early in the morning or late at night.

“When it’s this cold, yeah.  Usually it’s the battery,” said Sergio Scenderini of New Britain.

Newer batteries don’t have as much of a problem; it’s the older ones you have to look out for.  Sometimes they won’t even power back up when the car is jump-started.

“Especially when the batteries are old, and they don’t get checked out.  Especially with this cold weather, the batteries start dying down,” said Luis Ortiz, a fleet driver with AAA.
