Dead Man Was Beaten With Crutch: Cops

Police said a fight between two homeless men led to a slaying

A 21-year-old homeless man has been charged in the beating and stabbing of another homeless man whose body was found in an abandoned factory building in Waterbury, police said.

Police found the body of Joed Olivera, 39, around 1 p.m. Thursday inside the South Main Street building that used to house the Waterbury Companies Inc. Police believe that Olivera was beaten with his own crutch.

The victim had been living in the building and police said the killing apparently came after an argument between the men.

Shortly after finding Olivera’s body, police arrested Matthew O'Brien-Veader.
