Woman's Body Found After Southport Condo Fire

A body of an elderly woman was found in a Southport condo complex where there was a massive late night blaze, but she was not in one of the units damaged by fire, officials said.

The fire at the Quincy Condominiums, a 12-unit complex, was reported at 11:37 p.m. on Tuesday.

When firefighters arrived, fire was already burning through the roof, fire officials said, and several departments helped to get the fire under control by 1 a.m.

Few details are known about the woman, other than that she was in a condo not damaged in the blaze. It is too early to tell if her death is related to the fire, fire officials said.

The fire was contained to two condos. One was occupied. The other was not, officials said. Firefighters believe the fire started in the occupied condo.

Twenty-eight people live in the complex, 11 were temporarily displaced, according to the Red Cross.

One firefighter from the Bridgeport Fire Department was injured in a fall while fighting the fire and was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation. It was not a serious injury, fire officials said.

Residents were evacuated and an emergency center was opened in the Roger Ludlow High School cafeteria. The Red Cross is helping one family who was displaced because of heavy fire damage.

The Fairfield fire marshal is investigating.

The Red Cross has worked with 26 people in eight families affected by fire on Tuesday in Hartford, Waterbury, Southport and Stamford.
