Brazilian National Arrested in Bridgeport

Mayor Gomes Gildeci Sampaio and his friend were killed in the mayor's kitchen.

A Brazilian national accused of being involved in the murder of the mayor of a Brazilian city and the mayor’s friend has been deported from the United States to face prosecution following his arrest in Connecticut.

Isaias Goncalves Dos Santos, 31, had been living in Bridgeport, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was turned over to authorities in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

He and two of his brother have been charged in the crime, according to Brazilian news reports. One of Dos Santos' brothers  is a councilman whom Gomes Gildeci Sampaio, the mayor of São Sebastião do Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Brazil, had promised chairmanship of the House of Representatives, according to news reports. 

An Interpol notice had been issued for the arrest of Isaias Dos Santos, who allegedly devised a plan that led to the killing of a Brazilian mayor and a friend inside the mayor's kitchen in October 2009.

According to the Interpol Red Notice, Isaias Dos Santos is accused of devising a plan that executed Gildeci Sampaio and his friend, in the kitchen of the mayor's home Oct. 13, 2009.

Isaias Dos Santos was arrested on Jan. 31 after Bridgeport police alerted federal immigration authorities that he was believed to be in the city and had been in custody of Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Gildeci was criticized in Brazil for not complying with campaign promises, which brought about anger, according to news reports in Brazil.
