Bridgeport Acting Superintendent Announces Resignation

Bridgeport’s acting superintendent of schools has announced her resignation.

In a letter to the city’s Board of Education Frances Rabinowitz announced her resignation, effective Dec. 30, 2016. She cited disagreements with board member Maria Pereira as the reason for her decision.

“She has been blatant in not supporting the RULER program, focused on the social and emotional well-being of students,” Rabinowitz wrote in the letter.

Pereira responded to the letter by saying she was pleased with the decision.

“I believe this is positive move on behalf of 21,000 Bridgeport public school students,” she said.

She did not comment further.

In the resignation letter, Rabinowitz said she was proud of what she accomplished during her time as superintendent. She has served as interim superintendent for the Bridgeport Public Schools since 2014 and dropped out of the running to become the state’s education commissioner to serve the city.

“I believe in the talents and commitment of our staff, parents and the community to settle for nothing less than the success for every child,” she wrote in the letter.
