Bridgeport Officer in Coma After Serious Motorcycle Crash

Friends and family have launched a GoFundMe page and raised $13,225 so far for Officer Sheldon Mayne and his family.

A Bridgeport police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after a motorcycle crash on Friday, according to police and the GoFundMe page set up to raise money for him and his family.

Bridgeport Officer Shelton Mayne was admitted to Hartford Hospital after the crash Aug. 14. Police said Mayne was off duty at the time.

"He is in a coma right now and is fighting for his life. He is the main provider for his mother, sister and nephew," the GoFundMe page says. "Please help this family with any support as they have a very long road ahead with emotional and financial needs."

The goal was was to raise $10,000, but the page has collected more than $13,000 so far.

"Thank you everyone so much for your support. His head pressure is the same but not increasing and with his wounds there is no sign of infection so that's a good sign. He is still intubated and in a coma," wrote Rachel Jarvis, one of the GoFundMe page organizers.

Mayne's loved ones and colleagues are asking people to keep him in their "thoughts and prayers," according to a news release from Bridgeport police.

"Bridgeport Police Officers work relentlessly to keep our kids and families safe," Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said in a statement. "To have what happened to Officer Mayne is truly heartbreaking."

Sgt. Chuck Paris, president of the Bridgeport Police Union, said that to "become a police officer is a special calling and when one of us need support we come together like a family."

"Sheldon Mayne is that brother that needs assistance," Paris added.

More information about Mayne's condition and how to donate is available on the GoFundMe page.
