State-Run Ferries to Close

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury and Chester-Hadlyme ferries are slated to close as the state wrestles with balancing the budget.

One of the ferry operators told NBC Connecticut they received notice on Thursday that they have to be out of business by Aug. 25.

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury ferry is the nation's oldest continuously operating ferry service, according to the state Department of Transportation. It started in 1655 as a small raft pushed across the Connecticut River using long poles.

The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry is expected to close first, but the date has not been provided.

The state Department of Transportation runs both ferries. The state took over the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry in 1917, according to the state Department of Transportation Web site.
