Bus Driver Injured After Crashing Down Embankment in Groton

A bus driver was hospitalized with minor injuries after the bus she was driving with no passengers aboard crashed down an embankment on Interstate 95 in Groton early Friday morning.

Dianne Monteiro, 69, was headed northbound on the highway in the bus at about 4:28 a.m. on Friday when she veered off the left shoulder, crashed through the wire rope guardrail and went down an embankment.

An ambulance transported her to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London to be treated for minor injuries.

The left lane of Interstate 95 was closed in Groton as state police responded to the crash.

The crash happened between exits 88 and 89.

The airbag didn't deploy during the crash and Monteiro was wearing a seatbelt.

The bus was towed to Columbus Square.
