Bystanders Disarm Man During Fight: Cops

Police said Thomas Russo, of Old Saybrook, held a gun inches from the victim's face.

Some quick-thinking bystanders are getting credit for stopping a fight when things got out of control in the parking lot of a bar in Old Saybrook on Sunday night.

Police said Thomas Russo, of Old Saybrook, was drinking at the Monkey Farm Café on Boston Post Road and pointed a loaded 9mm Glock handgun just inches from another person’s face and yelled during a heated argument in the parking lot.

Bystanders were able to disarm Russo and threw the gun under a nearby car, police said.

Police arrested Russo around 11 p.m. and took the weapon.

No one was hurt.

Russo was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and carrying a firearm while drunk.

He is being held on $150,000 bond.

If he does not post bond, he will appear in the Middletown Superior Court on Tuesday.
