CL&P Rates Could Increase in the New Year

Connecticut Light & Power is looking to raise rates in the new year.

The proposed hike would result in a 14.2 percent, or $18.47, monthly increase for customers using 700 kilowatt hours per month, according to a spokesperson for CL&P.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority will need to approve the new rates, which are slated to take effect Jan. 1.

According to CL&P, standard service price for residential customers and small businesses are required by law to change twice a year, on Jan. 1 and July 1.

The company said the rate hike comes in response to a "dramatic increase in the price of electricity."

“The current spike in electricity prices stems from widely publicized constraints in the existing pipelines that bring natural gas to regional generating companies,” the power company wrote in a news release Friday.

Anyone who receives electricity from third-party suppliers will need to contact those suppliers to determine what the rate hikes mean for them.
