Gina McCarthy, former Commissioner of Connecticut's Connecticut’s Department of Environmental Protection, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a key post in the Environmental Protection Agency. She will be the new Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation.
President Barack Obama tapped McCarthy for the job in April. It’s taken this long to get her confirmed because a Republican senator from Wyoming put a hold on the nomination. Sen. John Barrasso said McCarthy failed to address his concerns about how she would implement the Clean Air Act in light of the EPA’s recent finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and safety.
McCarthy was named commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection in 2004.
