Family Walks Away From Plane Crash

A Connecticut pilot and his family had a close call Sunday when their plane crashed into the woods on Block Island.

New Shoreham, Rhode Island police Chief Vincent Carlone says the crash occurred around 3 p.m. when the single small-engine plane was attempting to land. The pilot, identified as 53-year-old Louis Telesford of Prospect was flying with five family members from Connecticut to New Shoreham. Police say Telesford overshot the runway, crashed through a fence and landed in some bushes. The crash caused a small fire but it was quickly extinguished.

Telesford tells NBC Connecticut no one was hurt and the family was able to go back into the plane and collect their belongings. He said he was grateful to the authorities and first responders for their handling of the situation.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
