Officials Identify Powder in Hamden ‘Suspicious Powder' Incident

Officials have identified the powder involved in a suspicious powder incident in Hamden on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Connecticut Transit Depot on State Street around 9:45 a.m. after getting a report of a sick employee in the back of the depot.

The patient told firefighters that they became ill while moving a bus and noticed a white substance on the dashboard of the vehicle. The employee was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated.

Investigators said they later learned that the former operator of the bus claimed to have used a powdered cleaning product to clean the bus following the shift. Officials were not able to confirm this on site because there was no product container available.

As a precautionary measure, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified and requested to test the isolated substance to make sure it was not hazardous.

DEEP said the material has been identified as Ajax, a cleaning chemical.

According to officials, the employee that felt sick was cleared medically and has returned to work.
