Call Center Deluged With Unemployment Claims

As more jobs disappear from Connecticut, one group is finding itself busier than it has been in a long time - the state Labor Department.

The agency has been deluged in recent weeks with displaced workers showing up, seeking critical benefits.

U.S. Rep Christopher Murphy, (5th District) toured one of the locations in Hartford Thursday and met with the workers on the front line who are dealing with the large number of unemployed who need benefits.

Murphy said that he and the rest of the Connecticut Congressional delegation will do all they can to try to help not only the unemployed, but also the workers at the call centers.

Carol Carney, the president of Local 269 of Council 4 AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said when there are economic troubles, people need services the most.

What's important now, she said, is that the call centers have enough staff to handle the increasing number of unemployed who need benefits.
