Canton School Responds to Threat

About 20 percent of students did not report to school on the day referenced in threat, according to a report.

Canton schools have increased police presence on Monday, the day referenced in a threatening note found on a stall in a student bathroom at Canton High School in March.

School officials sent home a letter in mid-March, saying that the threat was not deemed credible and safety is the first priority.

On March 29, the school superintendent sent a follow-up letter saying that they have not yet identified who wrote the note, that school is in session on April 2 and that the school implemented several safety precautions.

“While the Canton Police have investigated and found this not to be a credible threat, we take any threats such as this one, very seriously,” Supt. Kevin Case wrote in the follow-up letter.

The Canton Patch reports that at least 20 percent of the students chose to remain home for the day. They will not be penalized, but will have to make up missed work.

The Patch also reports that the superintendent is at the high school on Monday.

School officials have made some changes since the note was discovered and students and staff are not allowed to enter a building before 6:50 a.m. and they can only enter and leave the building through the main office.

Police are stationed inside and outside the building throughout the day. Students will need to keep their bags with them throughout the day and any bag that is unattended will be searched.
