Chief Medical Examiner Exits

Dr. H. Wayne Carver, 59, joined the department in 1983.

The state’s chief medical examiner for more than two decades will step down when a new chief is appointed, he said.

But Dr. H. Wayne Carver, 59, said he's not surrendering his scalpel.

Carver told the Associated Press he will stay on as a medical examiner, taking cases and testifying at trials, but he won't miss government bureaucracy and administrative streamlining.

Carver will meet with his staff on Thursday to talk about the search for his replacement and said he would not comment further.

Carver has played a prominent role in the state's most high-profile cases, including the Cheshire home invasion trials that sent two convicts to death row.

He joined the office in 1983 and served as interim chief for a year in 1986. Carver has headed the office since March 1989.
