Sen. Chris Murphy has been elected to a second term in the U.S. Senate.

He won handily over his opponent, Republican businessman Matt Corey.

First elected to the Senate in 2012, Murphy served three terms as Connecticut's 5th District representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Murphy has raised his profile in the Democratic Party in recent years and has been considered one of the possible contenders to run for president in 2020. It is something Murphy has said he is not interested in doing.

"I think there are a lot of people across this country that are disappointed with the divisiveness of his agenda it means that we are going to have to find common ground between Republicans and Democrats to move issues forward and I think this is a good thing for the country I think it's better when we make health care policy, tax policy with the Republicans and Democrats rather than it being shoved down the throats by one party," Murphy said after his victory Tuesday night.
