Closing Digital Divide Possible in West Haven

Forget your books and grab your laptop, iPods and iPads for class.

Most schools in the state ban electronics in the classroom but the New Haven Register reports that might change for students in West Haven.

The district is considering a "bring your own device" policy.

If accepted, it would mean that students can bring laptops, netbooks, iPads, iPods and smart phones from home and would be allowed to use the devices in class.

Supt. Neil Cavallaro told the Board of Education about the initiative.

"I think kids are at a disadvantage if they don't use the technology," he told the school board.  If the board moves forward, they will need to create a new electronic device policy.

"What we don't want to do is put kids who are already at a disadvantage at a further disadvantage,"  Cavallaro said.

If West Haven does adopt the BYOD (bring your own device) policy, it looks like they won't be the only district to embrace technology.

School board vice chairman Maria Toni Paine also said at the meeting that she's heard of other towns examining similar policies and that there are programs that can be installed on the smart phones and computers to prevent cheating, the Register reports.
