Connecticut Officer is Super Bowl-Bound

Officer's volunteerism lands her a trip to Indianapolis

A trip to the Super Bowl is the hottest ticket around these days and that's just what an animal control officer with Hartford police officer has, thanks to her good deeds.

Hartford Animal Control Officer Sherry DeGenova is one of 10 people selected by the New England Patriots and the Kraft family to attend the game in Indianapolis Sunday.

The idea came about after Mryna Kraft, wife of chairman and CEO Robert Kraft, died last year.

"Throughout the season, we celebrated volunteerism in my sweetheart's honor," Bob Kraft said.

The team set up an online sweepstakes called "Super Bowl for Super People" and people got to nominate everyone from police officers, firefighters, teachers, military personnel and nurses.  In all, nearly 4,000 people were nominated.

"My friend called me and I was like 'no I did not, I gotta go.'  Then I check my messages and I was contacted by them," DeGenova said about the day she found out she was going to the Super Bowl.  "It seems so surreal.  I don't remember from that phone call on for the rest of they day.  It was a complete blur.  It still doesn't seem real."

The 10 winners  get an all-expenses paid, one-day trip to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis for them and a guest, including game tickets, round-trip airfare, transportation to and from the game and tickets to the Patriots' post-game party.

DeGenova was the only winner from Connecticut.

"We are proud to honor these 10 individuals with this ‘Super Bowl for Super People' sweepstakes," Kraft said about the contest.  "We have heard countless examples of outstanding service through our ‘Celebrate Volunteerism' campaign and we are happy to extend the campaign with the recognition of these deserving individuals."
