Connecticut Dentist Agrees to $1.4M Medicaid Agreement

A Connecticut pediatric dentist has agreed to pay nearly $1.4 million to resolve allegations that he submitted false claims to the state Medicaid program for X-rays taken by uncertified assistants.

State and federal authorities announced Tuesday that Jesus Villegas, who operates clinics in Milford and West Haven, has entered into the civil settlement agreement.

Government authorities said the majority of X-rays taken at Villegas' clinics were taken by dental assistants who were not certified, and under the law, not payable by Medicaid. The alleged violations occurred from June 2010 through March 2014.

Federal investigators said "cutting corners could jeopardize the safety of patients."

The state gets 60 percent of the settlement.

Villegas did not immediately return a voicemail message left at his Milford clinic.
