More than a Makeover for Voluntown Family

Connecticut Honors Voluntown Family

The Girards can use a day in their honor after tragedy hit the Voluntown family.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell declared Thursday "Girard Family Day" in honor of "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition's" efforts to re-build their home.

This is the same day that the Girard family will get their first look at their new home, which hundreds of volunteers helped build.

The family has endured two tragedies in the past year. They lost their house in a fire last year and this past summer, dad, Thom, and the oldest son, Marc, drowned during a family outing.

Crews have been working for the past week, sometimes around the clock and battling the elements, to finish the job on time.

Schools in Voluntown are canceled for the celebration. As an added bonus, Connecticut Light & Power is giving the family free electricity for a year.
