The Connecticut Insurance Department says it recovered nearly $8 million for policyholders and taxpayers in 2018 by helping individuals, families and employers with their claims and complaints.
Acting Commissioner Paul Lombardo says the agency's consumer affairs staff each year helps thousands of consumers with their questions and concerns about their insurance coverage. The agency also ensures the companies are complying with state laws and regulations.
Data show the agency's unit fielded 6,350 complaints and inquiries in 2018 and helped policyholders recoup more than $5.5 million. During the same year, the department's Market Conduct Division levied approximately $2.3 million in fines against carriers, returning that money to the state's General Fund.
Most of the funds recovered for policyholders stemmed from complaints over health, accident, homeowners, life and annuities.
