Connecticut Marks MLK Day With Special Events

Today's Martin Luther King Jr. events across the state:

Bridgeport

“The Field of Hope,” University of Bridgeport, 400 University Ave.

Events includes an Indoor Carnival Birthday Party celebrating the 80th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is free and open to the public and is targeted towards elementary school children and their families. There will be face painting, ring toss games, hula hoops, children's science experiments, entertainment, Peace Poster Contest and more.

East Windsor

“24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast,” 9 a.m. to noon, La Renaissance, 53 Prospect Hill Road.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury holds its 8th annual celebration at Smith Middle School. The event will include several speeches and dance presentations.

Greenwich

"Celebrating a Life of Love," 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Bruce Museum, One Museum Drive.

The event at Bruce Museum provides educational programming that focuses on spreading the message of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It features special performances by Bridgeport’s Messiah Baptist Gospel Choir. Students will have the opportunity to make "I have a dream...." buttons expressing dreams inspired by the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Add your self-portraits to the Circle of Friends wall mural, as well as explore the Museum's galleries and exhibitions.

Hartford

Living the Dream: Let Freedom Ring

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the State Capitol in the west courtyard and south lobby. It will include the 23rd annual National Liberty Bell Ringing Celebration. It is free and will include a variety of presentations, speakers, and choirs including the Hopewell Baptist Concert Choir and the Shiloh Baptist Praise Ministry.

New Haven

“5th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Dance,” 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., ACES Educational Center for the Arts, 55 Audubon St.

The Connecticut Dance Alliance and ACES Educational Center for the Arts celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of WORLD DANCE, including a rich variety of dance styles and techniques from around the world each presented by a professional dancer.

Waterbury

“MLK Remembrance Quilt,” Abbott Terrace Health Center, 44 Abbott Terrace

Students form the Youth Health Service Corps will meet with elderly residents of Abbott Terrace Health Center in Waterbury to create the second annual MLK Remembrance Quilt.

West Hartford

West Hartford will hold its 13th annual celebration at 10 a.m. at the town hall auditorium with speakers and music from students.

The University of Hartford welcomes the former interim director of Oprah Winfrey's South African Leadership Academy to speak at 11 a.m.

Fairfield

"Change, Justice, and Hope for the Future," Jan. 21 to Jan. 23, Fairfield University, 1073 North Benson Road.

Events held during the MLK Holiday Observance at Fairfield University include an enlightening Multifaith Celebration of Diversity, the entertaining Peace Festival, the Human Relations Convocation with Dr. Kilkenny, Vision Awards Dinner, Connecticut Post essay contest for students, and a Youth Leadership Workshop.
