A correctional lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave after an offender being held at the New Haven Correctional Center was taken to the emergency room and died, according to the Department of Correction.
According to a press release, the incident began around 6:45 a.m. when that offender refused to leave the shower area and staff members had to restrain the person in the medical unit.
According to the release, the offender became unresponsive and staff called 911. The offender was taken to a local ER for treatment and was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m.
The Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Unit is investigating. The DOC is also conducting an internal investigation.
DOC officials did not identify the offender or the lieutenant who was placed on leave.
The New Haven Correctional Center primarily houses pretrial offenders.
