Court Refuses Warrant in Fatal Crosswalk Crash

Driver has been cleared of wrongdoing in Westport crash.

The driver police said hit a 62-year-old Westport woman on Dec. 21, who died from the injuries, has been cleared of any wrong-doing. The court refused to issue an arrest warrant, police said.

Sharon Broecking, 62 of Westport, died after being struck in a crosswalk at Post Road East and Westfair Drive at 7:06 p.m. on that December night.

Police submitted for an arrest warrant to charge Debra Hazan, 48, of Weston, with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle but the court refused it.

Westport police determined that excessive speed was not a factor in the crash and that Hazan was not on a cell phone.

The court determined that, based on photos of the scene and the fact that the woman was wearing dark clothing, there were insufficient grounds to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hazan acted negligently resulting in the death of Broecking.

No further charges will be filed, police said.
