Crematory Shut Down for Months

Fire heavily damaged a crematory at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden on Wednesday.

The flames broke out inside the building around 11:30 a.m.

One person inside the crematory was able to escape without injuries, according to fire officials.

The damage will shut down operations at the crematory for anywhere from two to six months, according to cemetery Supt. Mike Kroll. The building's roof and much of the equipment inside was damaged.

Funeral homes in the area were notified of the shut down, Kroll said.

Two funerals taking place at the cemetery were not disrupted by the fire, Kroll said.
