State Identifies Victim of Haddam Boating Accident

A 64-year-old Higganum man has died after his boat flipped at Haddam Meadows State Park Friday.

Sgt. Christopher Dwyer of the state Environmental Conservation Police said crews were called to Haddam Meadows State Park around 2:47 p.m. Dwyer said bystanders reported seeing a boat flip and a man, later identified as Gunnar Grenman, of Higganum, in the water. Bystanders rushed to his aid, pulling him onto another boat and performing CPR until emergency crews arrived.

Dwyer said the Grenman was not wearing a life jacket.

Grenman was taken to Middlesex Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it is not clear how the boat overturned at this time but it did not collide with another vessel.

The incident remains under investigation.

Authorities urge boaters to always wear life jackets to avoid a similar tragedy.
