DEEP Accepting Applications for Trail Improvement Funds

Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is inviting nonprofit organizations, communities, state departments and tribal governments to apply for funding for recreational trails.

The agency is accepting proposals until Oct. 31 for the Connecticut Recreational Trails Program.

Funds from the program can be used for planning, designing and constructing trails, maintaining and restoring existing trails and making trails accessible to people with disabilities. Funds can also be used to purchase or lease trail construction and maintenance equipment, acquire land for a trail and operate trail-related educational programs.

Grant amounts will vary and will depend on the availability of state funds.

The state previously awarded Watertown nearly $253,000 for a pedestrian bridge on the Steele Brook Greenway and more than $9,700 to Thompson's Trails Committee for trail maintenance.
