DOT Worker Killed on Highway

The worker was doing maintenance on Route 8 when he was hit by a truck.

A state Department of Transportation worker was struck by a truck and killed on Route 8 North by exit 29 in Waterbury, state police said.

The employee was identified as Daniel Dinardi, 41, of Rocky Hill. He was a DOT general supervisor.

“As word spread around the building, people were crying and asking each other how it could have happened," DOT spokesman Judd Everhart said. "Dan was quite well known around the headquarters building and very well liked. It really is like a big family here. And highway safety is something we talk about all of the time. It’s just tragic. Commissioner Jim Redeker sent a message to employees expressing his sympathies and asking that Dan and his family be kept in their thoughts and prayers.”

Dinardi was picking up debris on Route 8 North when he was hit by the truck, police said.

His DOT truck was parked on the shoulder and his emergency lights were flashing.

"The preliminary indication from investigators is that this was truly an accident," Lt. Paul Vance said.

The driver of the tractor trailer is cooperating with investigators.

Dinardi worked for the DOT for 21 years.

The northbound lanes of Route 8 were closed between exits 29 and 30 for about four hours.

Gov. Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman released a joint statement expressing sympathies for Dinardi and his family.

“We are extremely saddened by the death of Dan Dinardi," the statement says. "Our sympathies and prayers are with his family and friends as they are grieving his loss, and with his colleagues who have been deeply shaken by this terrible event.  Connecticut has workers who, in the course of performing their jobs, are at risk every day.  This tragedy reminds us to reflect on their efforts, and to recognize their dedication and commitment.  We must do everything we can to keep our workers safe. We are grateful for Mr. Dinardi’s 21 years of service to the Department of Transportation, and all that he has done to make this state a better place.”
