The mother of Jonathan Metz says her son is out of intensive care. Metz underwent surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford to close a wound where he tried to cut off his arm.
Metz, 31, was working on the furnace in his West Hartford home last Sunday when he dropped a tool, trapping his arm for his three days. He was rescued Wednesday, a day after he used his own tools and cut through most of his left arm when he smelled his flesh beginning to rot.
A Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center spokeswoman said Metz underwent a 2 1/2-hour muscle flap surgery Friday morning to prepare the stump of his arm for a prosthetic. He may be released from the hospital this week, hospital officials said.
Jonathan’s father, Paul Metz of Southport, North Carolina, told the Associated Press on Friday that his son is in good spirits and he is looking forward to being fitted with a prosthetic arm.
"He just so happened to have read a lot about prosthetics before this out of curiosity, so he's very hopeful about his future," his mother said.
A local company is donating a new furnace that will be installed at Metz's house Monday.
