Daughter of Man Killed While Riding Wheelchair on Route 1 in Stonington Plans to Sue Town

The daughter of a Connecticut man who was killed when he was struck by a car while driving his motorized wheelchair in Southington intends to sue the town.

According to the Notice of Claim filed on August 19, Laurie Davis said her father Raymond Lanphere was riding in the road because the condition of the sidewalks made it impossible for him to operate travel them in his wheelchair.

Lanphere, who was 77, was struck by a car on Route 1 in the Pawcatuck area of Stonington on May 25. He died of his injuries at the hospital the next day.

The notice claims that the area of the sidewalk was “uneven and pitted, consisting of elevations and depressions,” which made it impossible to navigate in the motorized wheelchair, forcing Lanphere to ride in the bike lane or breakdown lane of the road.

NBC Connecticut has reached out to the Stonington Selectmen’s Office for comment.
