Australian Cruise Ship Stops in New London on Trip Around the World

An Australian cruise ship traveling around the world made a stop in New London on Tuesday morning.

The Dawn Princess, sailing from Sydney, carries 2,000 passengers and more than 900 crew members. The ship started its journey in May.

Connecticut's Cruise Ship Task Force, working to bring more ships to New London, organized the visit to give passengers an opportunity to tour New London.

Scott Vickers, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, took the opportunity to reunite with family members from New Zealand who are making the trip aboard the Dawn Princess.

"It's the first time we're here, but it's great, a great little port to come into," said Maurice Vickers, of New Zealand. "It's picturesque."

Scott Vickers said he planned to take his parents and children to Mystic Seaport for the day.

In October of last year, the Grand Caribe docked at City Pier in New London, marking the first cruise ship to visit the New London port since 2010.

George Cassidy of the Connecticut Cruise Ship Task Force is hopeful that the Dawn Princess will lead the way in bringing more cruise ships to New London.

"It would really help the economy, especially helping all the bus companies too," said local bus driver Bill King.
