Occupy New Haven Can Stay For Now

A judge on Tuesday issued a 10-day reprieve.

Occupy New Haven protesters and city officials were in federal court on Wednesday to decide whether the Occupy camp can remain on the New Haven Green.

The New Haven group is believed to have one of the last encampments in the nation.

During the hearing, the judge granted a temporary restraining order, prohibiting the city from clearing Occupiers from the New Haven Green until at least April 9.

Occupy New Haven lawyer Norm Pattis argues that city officials cannot force the activists to leave the Green because it is private property.

A private committee owns the Green, which is dedicated for public use, but the city maintains it.

City officials say Occupy New Haven fails to recognize that the Green is a public space for all and the activists are essentially seeking to have the Green declared their own private property.
