Spider Mites and Bed Bugs Found at Hartford DSS Facility

The state Department of Social Services and Department of Rehabilitation Services offices at 3580 Main Street in Hartford, were closed Thursday after employees reportedly received bug bites while at the facility.

According to the Department of Social Services, carpeted areas and work areas were treated for spidermites. Additionally, three work stations received spot treatment for bed bugs.

The building is open for business as usual, but the DSS says it will continue to monitor the area i nthe coming week.

The facility was closed Thursday so exterminators could investigate. DSS employees were sent home around 1 p.m., according to DSS officials.

One woman was concerned the bugs would be in her clothes and infest her home.

"I just don't want them spreading in my house, that's all I know," said Leslie Cruz, of Hartford. "Now that I know that, I will just go home and wash my clothes."

Exterminators treated and fumigated the facility overnight.

The DSS reopened Friday morning at 8:30.
