Despite Ponzi Scheme, Work for Kids Goes On

A Hartford-based legal advocacy group for children will be able to continue its work, even after losing big bucks in an alleged financial fraud on Wall Street.

The non-profit Center for Children’s Advocacy is losing $85,000 because of the $50 billion Ponzi scheme financier Bernard Madoff is accused of orchestrating and will have to cut costs. It’s also getting $150,000 less than expected from a grant.

Martha Stone, the group's founder, said both sources of money make up about 20 percent of her budget. Her center is working to contact other funders to fill the gap and day-to-day operations continue to be fully staffed.
