Detective Justified in Deadly Shooting: State's Attorney

A prosecutor has determined that a Connecticut state police detective injured in a shootout in Westbrook last year was justified in killing the 24-year-old man who shot him.

Middlesex State's Attorney Peter McShane on Thursday released the findings of his investigation into the killing of Jonathan Alvarado of Deep River.

Authorities said Alvarado and 24-year-old Sebastian Award robbed an Old Saybrook motel in April 2013 and led police on a chase into Westbrook that ended with a crash and shootout.

After the crash, state police said Alvarado shot Det. Scott Wisner in the left shoulder and left ear and Wisner returned fire, wounding Award and fatally wounding Alvarado. A state police sergeant also shot Alvarado, but it wasn't the fatal shot.

McShane says Wisner's decision to open fire was appropriate.
