Give an inmate some free time and a metal locker and they’ll find a way to create something to stab a fellow inmate. So, gone are the lockers from Northern Correctional Institution in Somers.
Maintenance workers started taking lockers out of the maximum-security facility last week and plan to replace them with plastic containers, Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett says.
The lockers are being yanked after two inmates reportedly merged inventiveness and the diabolical will to injure another man to craft knives from locker parts that they used to stab another prisoner on March 16.
Rep. Karen Jarmoc of Enfield said she was told two prisoners made 11-inch and 6-inch knives from the lockers and stabbed the other inmate six times. The wounded prisoner survived.
