Doctor Rescues Drunken Man Clinging to Dock: Cops

The man had been in the water for hours, police said.

Boaters rescued an intoxicated man clinging to a dock in Branford on Saturday night and police said they likely saved the man’s life.

A local orthopedic surgeon and his friend were returning to their slip at Dutch Wharf Marina around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday when they saw Louis Collins, 44, in the darkness.

Collins was intoxicated and had fallen from the dock earlier in the evening, police said. He had been in the water for at least a couple hours.

Dr. Louis Iorio and his friend pulled Collins to safety.

“He was cold, wet and certainly hypothermic,” Officer Joseph Peterson said. “If it wasn’t for the fast actions of Dr. Iorio, Mr. Collins could have lost his life.”

Branford Fire Department paramedics treated Collins and took him to area medical facility for evaluation.
