Dodd Gives to Charity Amid Controversy

Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd is giving back.  He's handing over thousands of campaign dollars to charity that he received from Stanford Financial Group.  It's the same company now under federal investigation for fraud.

Sen. Dodd says he doesn't exactly know how much money his campaign received from Stanford Financial, but The Center for Responsive Politics reports since 2000 the amount has reached $27,500.

"Whatever it its, all of it will be donated to charity," Dodd told reporters Thursday during a foreclosure news conference in Hartford.  "In some cases you receive money in support from people who turned out to be people you don't want to be associated with, as is the case with Stanford."

Dodd has recently been the spotlight for two mortgages he got through the now defunct Countrywide Financial Corp.  The loans are interesting enough to be investigated by the Senate ethics committee.  Dodd has since rehired a third party to refinance them.

"I think people are more concerned about whether or not we're going to do something about their jobs and their future, not my job," he said.  "My job is to do my job.  And if you do that, the other politics, in my view, take care of themselves in time."
