Dodd Challenger Goes After Bush Dollars

Tom Foley is tapping into his Bush network for himself

Former Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley is reaching into deep pockets and out to the ex-ambassadors’ club to try to snag a U.S. Senate seat.

Foley, who plans to run against Sen. Chris Dodd in 2010, will be spending some time Wednesday with Greenwich donors who pulled out the platinum pens for George W. Bush’s presidential campaign, the Hill newspaper reports.

Foley is no stranger to raising campaign dollars. He raised at least $100,000 for the former president's campaign, the Hill reports.

Others expected to be there are Craig Stapleton, former  ambassador to the Czech Republic and France and former Ambassador to El Salvador ,  Charlie Glazer, the Hill reports.

Connecticut is considered a toss-up state for the upcoming election, according the Cook Political Report.

Since Dodd’s popularity has suffered over issues ranging from  a real estate deal with Countrywide Mortgage to  his oversight (or lack thereof) of AIG, many people have entered the race.

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons and state Sen. Sam Caligiuri are the declared Republican challengers.

Some expect Jack Orchulli, former chief executive officer of Michael Kors, to run as a Republican, and Peter Schiff’s name has been out there as a possible candidate, especially since his recent “Daily Show” appearance, when he hinted at a run.

Even Democrats have entered the fray.  Merrick Alpert is running and Roger Pearson, of Greenwich, is a possible candidate.

The primary will be held on Aug. 10, 2010 and the general election wil be held on Nov. 2, 2010.
