Car Explodes in Double Fatal Hartford Crash

Hartford police are investigating after a double fatal accident late Friday night.

Police said they were in the area of Main Street and Cleveland Avenue when they heard a loud explosion and saw a car engulfed in flames in a dirt parking lot near the intersection of Main and Windsor Streets.

One male victim was found badly burned inside the vehicle. A second male victim was discovered on the sidewalk near the car. Both were pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A witness told police that she saw the car recklessly speed past her on the wrong side of the road, then heard the crash.

Police said surveillance video from a nearby business shows the car speeding through the intersection traveling against the flow of traffic, hitting the curb, flipping over and exploding.

The victims have not yet been identified.

Police are still investigating to determine the cause of the crash but said they believe speed was a contributing factor.
