Easton Man Plans to Cross Atlantic in Row Boat

John Bauby, 40, of Easton intends to begin the 5,000-mile trek in the spring of 2013, but he's already begun preparing and raising money.

A professional diver from Connecticut is planning to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat.

John Bauby, 40, of Easton intends to begin the 5,000-mile trek in the spring of 2013, but he's already begun preparing and raising money.

And his boat is no ordinary rowboat. It's a 24-foot-long, 800-pound vessel made out of fiberglass, Kevlar and wood, and it's designed to stay afloat even if it's split in half.

Bauby said he's preparing for a five-month trip from Hatteras, N.C., to Portugal.

The Ocean Rowing Society International organization says six people have completed rowboat trips from the U.S. to Europe.

One was lost at sea, and another 16 couldn't finish or had to be rescued.
