An empty kayak with a life jacket and paddle in it washed ashore south of Hammonasset Point on Thursday morning, prompting a search, according to Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police.
EnCon police responded after receiving a report at 9 a.m. on Thursday and they are working to retrieve the kayak. The United States Coast Guard is searching the area.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the kayak "was tied up and got loose," DEEP officials said.
No further information was immediately available.
