Fairfield Woman Accused of Stealing Motorized Carts From Market

Christine Hobbs, 63, of Fairfield is accused of taking two electric carts for a joyride at the Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue around 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

The problem, police told the Fairfield Patch, was that she didn't stop at the store's parking lot, but made it all the way back to her home on Division Avenue.

Hobbs had initially tried to get the first electric cart home, but police said the battery died before she reached the eastern side of the parking lot, so Hobbs returned to the supermarket and took another cart - valued at $3,000 - from the store.

She then proceeded to drive it uphill, about a mile away, to her home, the Patch reports.

A customer spotted Hobbs driving away with the cart and reported it to the store manager, the Connecticut Post reports. When officers arrived at Hobbs' home to ask about the missing cart, she told officers that she “had permission from the manager" to take the cart, Police Sgt. Sue Lussier told the Patch.

The Stop & Shop manager told police that the electric carts are not supposed to be taken outside of the store and are only to be used by handicapped shoppers.

Hobbs was charged with two counts of third-degree larceny and released after posting $1,000 bond, according to court records

She is scheduled to appear on July 11 at Bridgeport Superior Court, the Fairfield Patch reported.
