Family of Hit-and-Run Victim Sues Suspected Driver

The family of a 7-year-old girl who was badly injured in a hit-and-run in Canton is suing the woman suspected of hitting the girl on Jan. 26.

On Friday, Anna Melendez’s mother filed a lawsuit in Hartford Superior Court against Leonita Scanlon, 18, of Simsbury. Scanlon turned herself in to Canton police last month.

The lawsuit accuses Scanlon of driving too quickly and not regarding to pedestrian safety when she hit Melendez.

As a result of the crash, Melendez suffered many injuries, including a depressed skull fracture, damage to her eardrum,  multiple rib fractures, and more, which have required extensive hospital care, surgical and medical care, as well as rehabilitative care.

Some of her injuries might be permanent, according to the suit.

Scanlon, a senior at Simsbury High School, was released on a $2,500 bond and is due in Hartford Superior Court on March 12.
