Fire Broke Out at Waste Water Treatment Facility in Cromwell This Morning

No one was hurt and damage is minimal after an early-morning fire at the Mattabasset District wastewater treatment plant in Cromwell on Monday.

Arthur Simonian, the executive director, said they noticed unusual temperatures in the incinerator area around 3 a.m. and found part of the system was smoking.

As a safety precaution, employees called the fire department and firefighters from Cromwell and Middletown responded and got the situation under control quickly.

"Our incinerator system is a system that processes our sludges, both from our plant and other plants. So, we're down for preventative maintenance this week anyway. So those sludges are being diverted to another facility and that’s again planned for this week anyway,” Simonian said.

No one was hurt and the damage to the incinerator is minimal, but crews will assess what repairs need to be made.
