Fire Destroys Ellington Home

High winds were causing problems for firefighters Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a house fire on Abbott Road in Ellington around 12:45 p.m., according to fire officials.

Maria McDonald was inside her home with her 18- year-old daughter, Annie, when they saw smoke in the home.

"There was smoke in the house, there was a flame and I realized my house was on fire," Maria McDonald said.

The blaze started in the back of the two-story contemporary home.

Maria's husband, John, was at a nearby golf course when someone at the course notified him that his house was on fire.

"He told me to turn around and look. Smoke was billowing and they said, 'That's your house,'" John said.

According to a fire official, high wind gusts played a role in fighting the fire.

"The fire spread to a nearby house and ignited a brush fire," he said.

There were no injuries and the family who built the home just two years feels nothing but lucky.

"We have each other. That's all that matters. We'll figure it out," John said.
