Fire Engulfs Stratford Duplex

One residence in a single-story duplex in Stratford is destroyed after an attic fire broke out Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Fire officials responded to 496A Niantic Lane shortly after 3:30 p.m. to find heavy smoke billowing from the roof area of the residence. The home is part of the Oronoque Village Condominium Complex located in the north end of town.

Officials said the home was unoccupied but that tax records indicate the owners to be Arlene and Barry Wilensky.

The burning home suffered extensive heat and water damage and is uninhabitable. Its neighboring unit received minor smoke damage, according to the fire department.

A number of firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, and one was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for observation, authorities said.

The town fire marshal is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
